Games Done Quick, the semi-annual speedrunning marathonthat raises millions of dollars for charity, has made an announcement on the status of this year’s Summer Games Done Quick. With the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic not showing any signs of subsiding, the organizers have no choice but to postpone the event.
Started in 2010,Games Done Quickhas grown year after year from a cobbled together event held in the basement of founder Mike Uyama’s mom’s house, to a week-long celebration of games while raising money for great causes. The event draws in speedrunners and fans from across the globe, performing traditional speedruns and occasionallysome amazing feats in gaming.

That this year’s Summer Games Done Quick is being postponed into August (now set for the 16th to 23rd of that month) should come as no surprise. Event organizers likely held off on postponing the originally scheduled June dates to see if the situation would improve, but as the opposite has happened, pushing back the event is the only course of action to take. This postponement also means that all dates for game submissions, volunteer applications, and attendee registration have been pushed back as well.
While many events cancelled or postponed dates almost immediately, some organizers took a more optimistic approach to wait and see if the pandemic would subside. The Taipei Game Show initially postponed its event from January to June, holding out hope things would improve, but have now canceled the event entirely.
Games Done Quick may be postponing its major charity event,as so many other have already, but in the wake of that news also made the announcement that a smaller online marathon would take place from April 17-19th. Corona Relief Done Quick will run during that weekend, with donations going to Direct Relief to help those in need of assistance during this unprecedented pandemic.
