It’s a little bit astounding how successful the PlayStation Portable has been in Japan. Nine years after release and it’s still incredibly popular. In an effort to make the device even more appealing to families and children, Sony is implementing yet another price drop on the hardware. Effective tomorrow, the PSP-3000 will be available for the low, low price of 13,800 yen, while the value pack bundle (which includes a memory card and cleaning cloth) drops to 14,800 yen.

That’s a pretty solid price and I’m sure that they’ll manage to push quite a few units with it. No word yet on whether a similar price reduction will occur elsewhere in the world, but I wouldn’t be surprised. It’s still a rather excellent handheld with a very robust library, and I think it makes an appealing alternative to both the 3DS and Vita at this point.
