Those Awesome Guys and developer Panik Arcadehave announcedthat the N64-inspired collectathon driving game,Yellow Taxi Goes Vroom, will release on April 9th on PC.
Alongside the release date announcement, there’s a pretty incredible trailer that – trailer-spoiler alert – ends in a non-sequitur.
The parts of the trailer that do show the game itself depict a chaotic mix of different gameplay styles centered around the titular yellow taxi.Yellow Taxi Goes Vroombills itself as a platformer with no jump button. Instead, you simply put the pedal down and defy gravity as best you can. Beyond simply filling your trunk with assorted junk, you’re also trying to “unravel the grand conspiracy happening on Grandma’s Island”
WhileYellow Taxi Goes Vroomdescribes itself as N64-inspired, it has a manic quality that you wouldn’t typically find on the console. Or in the rather sluggish early 3D era in general, really. Well, aside fromMad Panic Coaster.
I think it looks pretty cool. Not crazy about the name, but the N64 is one of my favorite consoles, even if it does occupy a really uncomfortable time period of video game history. The collectathon platformer blossomed and died really quickly, and it’s been nice to see a small resurgence in the indie and small-budget areas of development. Thankfully, there’s a demo to try out right now, which I will probably do tonight after work.
