Nickelodeon’s recent hitMonster High: The Movie, a musical based on Mattel’s popular line of toys. is getting a new sequel in partnership with Mattel Television.

The toy franchise - which debuted in 2010 with a popular line of dolls and accessories inspired byclassic horror movie monsters and creatures like Frankenstein, Dracula, and the Creature from the Black Lagoon - has inspired a number of related media and merchandise, including web series, games, and a YA book series.Nickelodeon’s recentMonster High: The Moviewas released earlier this month and directed by Todd Holland.

As reported byDeadline, the sequel will begin production in Vancouver in January and will be ready to air on Nickelodeon and Paramount Plusin time for Halloween2023. TheMonster Highfilmfollows Clawdeen Wolf (Miia Harris) as she arrives at Monster High with a dark secret. With the help of her friends Draculaura (Nayah Damasen) and Frankie Stein (Ceci Balagot), she is able to embrace her true monster heart and save the school from total destruction. The film also stars Case Walker, Kyle Selig, Marci T. House, Scotch Ellis Loring, Steve Valentine, Jy Prishkulnik, Lina Lecompte, Justin Derickson, Lilah Fitzgerald and Nasiv Sall.

Todd Holland will return to his directorial role for theMonster Highsequel. “We are ecstatic to tell the monstrous next chapter of this beloved franchise to our audience," said Zack Olin and Shauna Phelan, Co-Heads of Nickelodeon & Awesomeness Live-Action. “Monster High’s message of embracing one’s unique self is as important as ever and we look forward to expanding the stories of these fan-favorite characters.”

Monster High: The Moviewas hugely successful with Nickelodeon and Paramount audiences, hitting the #1 kids' movie spot, which is a good omen for the sequel. The toy franchise has collected anddeveloped new horror fansfor over a decade, but the live-action film version will no doubt expand the characters to new audiences beyond the toy series’ age demographic to include parents and adults.

The movie musical format, which has grown in popularity after a few decades, has proven a draw among all age ranges who like their monsters with a dose of song and dance, while kid audiences get a gleeful introduction to a lighter variety of monster madness.

TheMonster Highanimated series is slated to premiere on Friday, October 28, at 7 p.m. (ET/PT) onNickelodeon.
