The question of life on Mars is arguably the greatest of our clock time . And we ’re getting very cheeseparing to an answer – much snug than you might think .
Mars has gripped us for decade , with scientific discipline fiction authors of old imagining this world might be inhabit by intelligent organism like us . Scientists in the mid-20th century , too , guess at one point that Mars might have vegetation or other live matter on its Earth’s surface . Their dreams were quashed when NASA ’s Mariner 4 spacecraft returned thefirst images of Marsin 1965 , revealing it to be a desolate universe .
But the allure remains , mostly because our neighbor appears to have had land - like conditions in its aloof past . It apparently had all the necessary ingredient for life too , albeit probably only microbial spirit , so if it did n’t exist there , just how alone is our planet ?

“ If you somehow rule out any preindication of biological action on Mars , then you take off have got to mean Earth must be really special , ” said Monica Grady , professor in Planetary Sciences at the Open University , to IFLScience . Grady hosted a show on BBC Radio 4 in the UK this Monday calledHunting the Martians(available to heed online ) , as part of the BBC’sMars Weektaking billet from March 4 to 10 .

“ If this chemistry has n’t fit on on Mars , what ’s quit it ? ” Grady carry on . “ Then we ’ve got to think , okay , our best hope of finding lifespan in the Solar System has lead . Missions like the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter ( MRO ) , meanwhile , have helped us map the surface and obtain orbit of pursuit , and ESA ’s Trace Gas Orbiter ( TGO ) spacecraft is about to start hunting for methane on the surface that may have a biological inception .
Coupled with a source of vigour – the Sun – and organic compounds on the control surface , Mars is recall to have all the central element for life . But the main dubiousness remaining at the minute is whether aliveness has actually evolve there , and if it can still survive today .
Mars seems to have gone through a habitable period much originally than Earth . Some estimates indicate it had more water than the Arctic Ocean4.3 billion days ago , when it had a thicker atmosphere and the Sun was lustrous than it is now , so the major planet was warmer .
However , the Red Planet subsequently lost its magnetized field for reasons unknown , with its standard pressure slow being erode by the Sun . This lead to the barren earth we see today , where water can not exist on its surface without being roil away by the crushed press .
“ The circumstance for life on Mars would have got going more speedily than on Earth , ” tell Grady . “ So that immediately makes you think , right , there ’s been rivers on Mars , maybe there ’s been life there . ”
To enquire incisively what fall out to Mars , two upcoming rovers should give us our best aspect at biography on the planet yet . One is ESA ’s ExoMars rover and the other is NASA ’s Mars 2020 rover , both due to Edwin Herbert Land on the Red Planet in early 2021 . “ The landing web site must be an ancient site more than 3.5 billion years old that could have once support life , if it ever existed on Mars , ” Ken Farley , project scientist for the Mars 2020 foreign mission , told IFLScience . “ We want a land site that , in addition to having once been habitable , has Rock that could have preserved grounds of [ spirit ’s ] presence , if it were there . ”
All three of those fix fit the flyer , with Columbia Hills having a “ limited attractor ” according to Farley , as we know of an ancient hotspring deposit there that could have been a habitable environment . Each are interesting for their own cause , though – and each will secern us more about the past and present habitability of Mars .
One goal of the Mars 2020 wanderer will be to store sample in cores that could be returned to Earth by a succeeding mission . A Mars sample tax return mission would be a key overture in our understanding of the planet , with the next footmark being man missions . Until those happen , however , we ’ll have to nibble together as much as we can about this world from rovers and satellite .
But while the question of spirit on Mars remain an open one , it is one we could solve shortly . The TGO will start skill activity in October this year , and it could very cursorily provide answers about the origin of methane and other gases . If it does n’t , we ’ve still got ExoMars and Mars 2020 to await onwards to in four year .
So , the lookup for life on Mars continues . And it may not be too longsighted before we find out if we are alone in the Solar System or just one of several inhabited worlds .
