After nine years in production, indie game studio Hypixel Studios has announced the cancellation of the highly anticipated upcomingMinecraft-based game,Hytale. The axed title would have had players complete and create minigames in aMinecraft-like world. The project had been in the works since 2015, following the success of the HypixelMinecraftserver with a similar premise.
Sadly, the studio will be winding down operations and shutting downover the next few months, taking the unreleasedHytalewith it. The heartbreaking announcement was shared on theHytalewebsite on June 23, leaving the game’s dedicated community devastated and prompting hershohm onChange.orgto promptly create a petition to save the game.

Now, just five days later, the petition has already passed 1,500 signatures. Rather than asking the studio heads and Riot Games (who provided funding for the canceled title) to continue working onHytale, the petition asks the devs to release any part of the game’s build to its fans, similar to thepetition for the cancelledKindgom Hearts Missing-Link, “ensuring Hytale’s legacy can live on through the community!”
Hytale Was Meant To Continue The Legacy Of The Popular Hypixel Minecraft Server
The 12-Year-Old Server Remains Popular To This Day
The idea forHytalestarted from the 2013HypixelMinecraftserver, where several creators made their own content on top of the base game. It gave rise to popular minigame modes like Bed Wars, Murder Mystery, and many more minigame types that are still popular to this day. The server quickly became extremely influential, reaching anall-time peak of 216 thousand concurrent playersfour years ago, and stillregularly maintains between 20 and 50 thousand players daily, according toKrashnz.
In 2015, the creators ofHypixeldecided to start their own studio and create a full game to free themselves from the confines ofusingMinecraftas a base. For the next nine years, the team worked hard on developing the title with input from a dedicated community, evenmanaging to secure funding from Riot Games. Unfortunately, in the end, it wasn’t enough, andHypixelwas ultimately canned earlier this week, after nearly a decade in development.
