Sometimes not all is as it seems . On the the streets of New York City , that can mean some of the iconic yellow cab are in fact disguised NYPD cop gondola — but how can you make out them ?
Motherboardyesterday publishedan article , based on FOIA requests , which saw the NYPD admit that it hasat least three undercover fuzz car that are made to look like taxis . But , asBoing Boing reportsandGawker has told us in the past , some people have known about the phenomenon for much , much longer .
One of those hoi polloi is Herman Yung , who ’s a keen cab - spotter . Yesterday , in reply to the Motherboard article , hepublished his own galleryshowing seven taxi that he ’s distinguish in late years which he trust to be cop machine . Incidentally , their registered hack numbers racket are — or at least , were—2W97 , 6Y19 , 6Y17 , 2W95 , 2W68 , 6Y13 , and 6Y21 , if you ’re see out .

But perhaps more interesting is Yung ’s pathfinder to spotting these hush-hush cop cars . Here are histop tips :
Look for a missing heart divider . Undercover NYPD taxi cab do n’t commonly have the plastic splitter separating the backseat from the front seat .
Disconnected or fake meter . It ’s just for show and on some of these vehicle , the meter is missing completely from the dashboard .

Grey bumper . This one used to be an easy tell , but today the vehicles have been update to sport the regular yellow bumper .
Extra bleak side skirts . This is another trait that has slowly been phase out since it made it too easy to make out to those on the lookout station .
A computer in the front tail . If you may get penny-pinching enough , look for the NYPD computing machine mounted in the pith cabinet country in the front seat .

2W and 6Y. This is probably the easy way to secern . All of the undercover taxis sport a licence issue starting with 2W and 6Y ( important note : Not all vehicle starting with these characters are secret ) .
